Reuters - U.S. President George W. Bush sought
to salvage his legacy on the world stage on Wednesday by
defending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and appealing to
Russia to drop opposition to a missile defense shield.

AFP - Iraqi forces need to be strengthened and some troops are “not up to the task”, the US said Wednesday, after police and army units failed to crush Shiite militiamen despite a weeklong crackdown in Basra.

Bomb explodes near top Iraq generals in Basra (Reuters)

Reuters - A roadside bomb exploded near a
convoy carrying Iraqi generals in a Shi’ite militia stronghold
in the southern city of Basra on Wednesday, but the officials
were unhurt, one of the officers said.
